UN seeks quick aid for countries hit by quake

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 10 (Reuters) - The United Nations urged world governments on Monday to give generously to relief efforts in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan as U.N. experts scrambled to assess needs following a massive earthquake.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, already has put out an urgent call for helicopters and search-and-rescue teams and is planning to launch an emergency appeal for cash on Tuesday in New York and Geneva, said Edward Tsui, who heads OCHA's New York office.

The appeal will cover immediate live-saving requirements for the affected countries plus emergency needs for the next six months in food, shelter, clean water and sanitation and logistic support, Tsui told a news conference.
